Sealant for outdoor work - the necessary material for sealing joints and seams, window openings (including PVC windows), working ventilation systems, domes, greenhouses. For facade exterior work, only those sealants that are resistant to moisture and temperature changes are suitable. Construction shops offer a choice of many different types of sealing materials.
All types of sealants, regardless of performance, perform one important mission: seal the joints, protecting the structure from moisture "under the seam". Depending on the construction targets, a specific type of sealing material is selected:
- Acrylic sealant for wood and other contact surfaces;
- Silicone sealant for outdoor work;
- Two-component material for seams and joints;
- Polyurethane sealant for outdoor applications.
The choice of a sealing compound is an important process. The selected building sealant should be not only qualitative, but also meet a number of specific requirements:
- Elasticity of construction and finishing material;
- Optimum adhesion to surfaces, which promotes good contact of sealant with facade materials;
- Ecological and safety of the composition;
- Simplicity and convenience in work, the ability to quickly implement all the proper manipulations;
- Availability in terms of price, the possibility to choose a sealant for windows, walls, joints with the color of the facades;
- Maintainability of building materials;
- A certain appearance (for example, transparent for delicate work);
A good facade sealant will allow to work in any climatic conditions. Upon completion of the finishing works, the façade elements should not be afraid of moisture, and also react to temperature changes.
Features of silicone sealing
Silicone sealants are suitable for the most difficult or delicate work. Sealants with silicone filling consist of plasticizers, dyes, various additives. Despite this, the product is safe.
It should be noted a number of features of silicone, used as a basis for sealants:
- High degree of elasticity, necessary for a good and quick filling of gaps and seams;
- Excellent strength characteristics, allowing to conduct the most complex outdoor work in conditions of particularly intensive use;
- Quality silicones are not afraid of a sudden change in temperature conditions;
- Qualitative building sealants with a good composition are characterized by a high degree of adhesion;
- Silicone sealant is frost-resistant.
It is worth noting that the quality sealant is water resistant. Choosing the material for outdoor design, you can not worry about the possible difficulties associated with the compatibility of finishing sheets. Suitable silicone sealant for granite, well cope with the finish of joints on concrete, used to seal metal or stones, it is convenient to work with plastic windows.
For silicone sealants, some features are characteristic. There are neutral and acid species. Neutral sealant is better used for performing restoration work in swimming pools, in bathrooms or in the kitchen. A small amount of silicone may be needed to repair the plumbing.
Acid species are used for exterior decoration. They fit well on the stone and interact with metal structures. It is also possible to use acid analogues for working with wood.
The tree is characterized by those qualities that are not inherent in any other type of materials. That's why silicone compounds not only seal, but also impregnate the fabric. This allows you to preserve the appearance and performance of wood for as long as possible.
It is also worth noting that the frost-resistant silicone material is not amenable to staining or restoring. For this reason, manufacturers produce sealants for facade decoration in various colors. The buyer can choose the color of the material, which is most suitable for him. For example, for wooden surfaces a brown color is suitable. White or transparent appearance is good in working with PVC window. You can find colored compositions "under the stone."
Sealing with acrylic
Adherents of environmentally friendly materials use acrylic sealants. There are water resistant and non-waterproof types. Moisture-resistant acrylic sealant for wood and other surfaces is used in working with the roof and window apertures. The material is frost-resistant, capable of withstanding low temperature loads (up to 30 degrees). Non-waterproof materials are used to secure low-mobility structures.
Acrylic sealant for wood and other surfaces has the following advantages:
- The material is often purchased by the construction company because of its simplicity and ease of use;
- External acrylic for sealing is realized at a low price;
- Good adhesion;
- Acrylic sealant for wood is resistant to high temperatures, does not burn;
- Not afraid of ultraviolet radiation;
- It is easy to color. You can choose a neutral material for decoration, modifying its color or shade if necessary.
However, acrylic sealant for wood and other surfaces is afraid of external temperature changes, and also loses its sealing qualities due to the harmful effects of moisture. Another important point: acrylic is only suitable in gaps with an opening less than 15%. Otherwise, delamination may occur.
To ensure that the acrylic sealants show their best side, they need dryness and heat. It takes about 24 hours to completely harden the sealant. The most expensive in this category are transparent compounds.
Sealing with polyurethane
Polyurethane materials are ideal for external work. When cho
osing which sealant to buy, so that it is combined with different surfaces, it is worth paying special attention to materials with a polyurethane composition.
Working with it, you can not only work with joints or give tightness to wide seams, but also use the material as a reliable adhesive that holds together any details. The uniqueness of polyurethane sealant lies in the fact that it is not just not afraid of moisture, but it also grows stronger when it comes into contact with it. Today it is the best universal material for external use in particularly wet regions.
Polyurethane adhesive sealant is a one-component polyurethane, which is particularly elastic. It can be chosen as a surrogate for mounting foam. One material is capable of replacing at least three types of construction mixtures for various jobs.
Sealants with polyurethane backing are distinguished by the following outstanding characteristics:
- Enhanced adhesion, especially important for the outer fabric;
- The material is water resistant, from contact with moisture becomes even better;
- The mass for external sealing quickly hardens;
- Polyurethane is not afraid of UV radiation;
- Does not release toxins and other harmful components;
- Long service life.
Frost-resistant sealant for concrete, ceramics, plastics, wood is easy to color. Even if using polyurethane solely as glue, the facade will still need to be painted, adjusting the nuances of the exterior. Moisture-resistant outer surface perfectly interacts with any kind of paint.
You can choose the right tone and make a polyurethane finish colored or choose a contrasting shade that will go well with granite, stone, wood, will give a special appeal to metal or plastic surfaces. The most popular variants are: dark brown color, white or beige tone or completely transparent sealant.
Siliconeized compositions (acrylolatex)
If you need a frost-resistant compound and a strong water-resistant base, you should choose silicone compounds. In fact, the sealant for stone, plaster, glass, wood and siding has the same characteristics as acrylic.
A durable and reliable compound can withstand the temperature changes, humidity, long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays. Acrylolatex sealers are suitable for all types of sealing: both external and internal.
Particular advantage, why choose silicone compositions - the ability of the composition to adapt to deformations. The base of the seam remains dense, but sufficiently elastic. After solidification, the surface can be painted. It is better to use latex paints. To create a color canvas with a deep intense tone, it is better to choose a latex dye.
As always, the actual colors are: dark brown, light brown, close to the beige palette, white, black. Many would prefer a transparent option, which is suitable for all occasions.
Bituminous sealant: a special kind
To repair the roof, it is better to choose a brown bituminous sealant. It is based on rubber and bitumen. We can say that it is the founder of all sealants, the first product that was used to insulate and seal the external foundation, roof and drainage systems.
Of course, you can choose a more expensive transparent sealant. However, this is not always justified. Simple brown sealants based on bitumen allow sealing any linen. The composition is not afraid of atmospheric precipitation, the fillers do not dissolve in the liquid.
Bituminous compositions are characterized by a high degree of elasticity. On the one hand, this is an indisputable advantage. On the other hand, not always acceptable brown color is permissible to use in the exterior of the building, and the sealant can not be exposed.
What we choose should last a long time. If we seal the facade of the building and any external surfaces, to the choice of sealing compounds are suitable with all responsibility. In the first place there should always be performance characteristics, and only then aesthetics and the pursuit of fashionable novelties (transparent material, exclusivity, original goods on the market).
